How We Use Your Information
Name and contact information, and work email address:
Your employer may provide us with your name and email address in order to create an account for you. This information is never shared with any third parties and is stored securely on our cloud services. We use this information to allow you to log in to your account and access our services.
Usage data:
We collect usage data to understand how often our users use the app. This allows us to improve our services by spending more time fixing features that are used more frequently. This data is stored securely in our cloud in a way that is not personally identifiable to you.
Device information:
To fix bugs and improve our app, we collect basic information about the device(s) that you use. This includes information such as the device make and model, and the operating system that you use. This data is stored securely in our cloud in a way that is not personally identifiable to you.
Personal Data:
We collect your date of birth, which is used to calculate your age. Your age is then used within algorithms for detecting sleep and activity levels. The main way this is used is that your age broadly determines your maximum heart rate, and your maximum heart rate is a key component of algorithms that determine how physically hard your body is working based on your current heart rate compared to your maximum.
We also collect your height, which is used by various algorithms to determine your activity level. Calculations that determine calorie expenditure based on movement (i.e., how many calories you burn when walking) need your height to be accurate. Algorithms that calculate the distance walked from the number of steps need to know your height in order to estimate your stride length.
We also collect your weight, which is used by some algorithms that calculate your activity level, as well as how many calories are burned in some cases.
Biometric Data:
Your sense band collects heart rate, skin temperature, and motion data throughout the day while you are wearing it. This data is collected on your phone and sent to our cloud service. We use this data in the following ways:
We compute, collect, and store data about your sleep, which includes all the data visible in the app, consisting of:
- The time that you went to sleep and woke up
- Your heart rate zones while you are sleeping (which allows us to determine how deep your sleep is)
We also collect and store recovery-based data that is calculated based on your heart rate:
- Your “overnight heart rate variability” - this is information gathered while you are asleep about the time between heartbeats. This is a statistical measure that gives us information on how well rested or recovered you are.
- Your “overnight respiratory rate” - this information is calculated based on your heart rate overnight. This is an estimate of the number of breaths per minute you are taking.
- Your overnight “resting heart rate” - this is a fitness measure based on how low your heart rate gets when you are in a deep sleep.
We compute, collect, and store data about your heart rate while you are streaming your heart rate. This includes:
- Your heart rate (number of heart beats per minute)
- Your “peak to peak interval” (the time between your heartbeats) - this can be used to calculate some statistical recovery measures such as “heart rate variation” or HRV.
